Dizzee Brasscal are a brass quintet from Bexleyheath in Kent, founded by Thomas Rudd and Aled Smith. The members arrange and perform popular music from 1700-2010 with some of their repertoire being either satirical upbeat brass covers of songs currently in the charts, or slow and lyrical arrangements of heartfelt ballads. Their repertoire ranges from Classical and Baroque through to Pop, Rock and film music! Dizzee Brasscal formed in December 2008 as a quartet, put together to give a brass demonstration at a primary school, named then however with the ever inspiring title “The Quartet”. Hours of work went into their first arranged piece, entitled simply “Pop Medley”. It was a concoction of all of the biggest hits of the time, from Mika’s “Big Girl You Are Beautiful”, through to “The Crazy Frog”, “Postman Pat”, “Wallace and Grommit”, “Thomas The Tank Engine”, and finally coming to a close with Mark Ronson’s punchy, “Valerie”. The Quartet survived just one assembly, but it was from this point that Thomas Rudd and Aled Smith began arranging music. In April 2009, the two decided that they had a big enough repertoire of quintet greats to start a group. They called on old friends from BAMPA (Bexley Academy for Music and Performing Arts) and soon a quintet was born, and christened, "Dizzee Brasscal". To date, the group have performed at several weddings, played in Brighton Pavilion Gardens and also performed for a charity at The Primrose Prom. With music being released every day and a difference in personal tastes, the band work hard to keep their repertoire up to date.
